A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester that helps to transform farm wastes or energy crops into an energy source. The plants compose of air-tight tanks with many different structures. They can be fed with energy crops like maize silage, biodegradable wastes, sewage sludge, and food waste. During the process, the bacteria inside breaks down the waste material and turn it into biogas, which mainly contains methane and carbon dioxide.

Increasing the amount of biogas can be done by adding wastewater from dairy, sugar, or brewery industry to the mix. In one experiment, the addition of 10% cow whey to 90% wastewater from beer factory was able to increase the production of biogas by 2.5 times.

On the other hand, manufacturing biogas from intentionally planted maize is considered to be unsustainable and damaging for the soil. This is because it causes extra concentrated, intense, and soil eroding nature of the plantations.
